Ornithological field notes

Taiwan ranges from temperate to tropical, with mountains upto almost 4,000 metres, so it is home to an enormous range of wildlife.  While we didn't spend any time looking for birds, we stumbled across a couple of interesting ones.

A night heron (I think a rufous night heron) - wandering around a park in the middle of Taipei in the middle of the day.  Maybe he had jetlag too. The Chinese for "night heron" is 夜鷺 ie "night heron"!

A fairly poor photo of something like a reef heron - foraging on a coastal rock shelf.  If it is a reef heron, the Chinese name is 岩鷺, or "rock heron".

If I saw this in Australia I would call it a cattle egret.  In Taiwan it's called 黃頭鷺
or "yellow-headed heron".  Amusingly, on the mainland it's called 牛背鷺, or "ox back heron", which will resonate for anyone who has watched them on the backs of cattle.
